Description

Glass upgrade for DG/HSI and attitude instruments in GA aircraft

  • Replaces traditional electromechanical instruments; can be configured in attitude, DG/HI/HSI and turn coordinator positions
  • Bright, sunlight-readable 3.5" color LCD display sized to fit the standard 3-1/8" instrument cutout
  • Certified via the Approved Model List (AML) for STC installation on over 560 aircraft makes and models
  • Includes 4-hour battery backup with battery status indicator
  • Dual G5 installation provides reversible display capability and the added redundancy of two ADAHRS and two battery backups

The G5 electronic flight instrument offers exceptional performance, reliability and ease of installation as a direct replacement for primary attitude and/or directional gyroscopes in certified fixed-wing aircraft. For certain aircraft equipped with G500 or G500 TXi g5 can also be used as a backup flight instrument for these systems. Providing a cost-effective upgrade path via a full AML, the compact and economical G5 brings a modern "glass cockpit" reference to thousands of aircraft that would otherwise rely on older vacuum-driven equipment.

En bref

Affordable glass solution

Designed for installation in FAR Part 23 Class 1 and Class 2 aircraft (singles and twins weighing less than 6,000 pounds), the 3.5-inch G5 display fits into a standard 3-1/8-inch round cutout, occupying just a fraction of the space and weight previously required by conventional gyro instruments. It is valid for flight in both VFR and IFR conditions. And, by combining visual cues and data readings once scattered across a myriad of instruments, the G5 makes it easy to digitize flight information - so pilots can react more quickly and intuitively to any in-flight situation.

Fail-safe attitude reference

When configured as an attitude indicator, the G5 uses a solid-state AHRS reference to provide smooth, stable and reliable horizon-based pitch and roll indications. In addition to aircraft attitude, the G5 will also support the display of airspeed, altitude, vertical speed, slip/skid, rate of turn, configurable V-speed references, barometric setting and selected altitude, as well as visual alerts upon arrival at a preselected altitude. An integrated GPS receiver provides highly accurate readings of ground speed and ground track. In addition, a dedicated rotary knob on the unit allows easy adjustments to altitude bugs and barometric pressure settings.

Gain a clearer sense of direction

To provide even more situational awareness, the G5 is also approved for installation as a replacement heading indicator/directional gyro (HI or DG) or horizontal situation indicator (HSI) in your panel. When combined with a magnetometer GMU 11 affordable, GAD™ 29 navigation data interface, and select VHF NAV/COMM or GPS navigators, the G5 can be used as a primary reference source for magnetic heading, VOR/LOC guidance and/or GPS guidance - as well as to provide distance and ground speed indications. The unit displays GPS/VOR/LOC vertical and lateral heading error when available. And you can use the G5 instrument's rotary knob to easily make and adjust heading selections - or to control heading bug settings in DG installations. For better system integration, a single magnetometer can provide heading information to two G5 units simultaneously. In addition, G5 can provide heading output to select third-party autopilots (with GAD 29B).

Discover an innovative autopilot system

Reduce workload and fly with more confidence by combining the G5 with our digital autopilot GFC™ 500 1 (sold separately). The GFC 500 offers silky smooth flight control and advanced safety enhancement capabilities at a cost-effective price never before available on certified alternatives for light fixed-wing aircraft.

Based on our revolutionary GFC 700 installed in thousands of new aircraft, the GFC 500 offers corrective GARMIN ESP™ technology, overspeed and underspeed protection and a dedicated LVL button. In addition, it offers the ability to fly coupled GPS and IFR approaches with GARMIN and NAV/COMM compatible navigators, as well as an optional go-around switch and automatic and manual electric trim.

As part of the GFC 500 system, G5 provides input and display of attitude preselect, heading bug, vertical speed bug, speed target and flight director command bars, while a dedicated GMC 507 autopilot controller provides large dedicated buttons, knobs and control wheel for altitude, heading and vertical speed selection mode.

Additionally, in emergency engine power loss situations, pairing the G5 with your GTN™ Xi navigator can activate the functionality Smart Glide™ 2 . When enabled, Smart Glide finds and creates a direct route to an estimated airport within glide range - or alerts you if no airport is estimated within glide range. When paired with your compatible GARMIN autopilot (sold separately), Smart Glide automatically activates the autopilot's IAS mode at the best glide speed - using GPS guidance to fly the aircraft near the selected airport - so you can regain control and land the aircraft.

Two displays Double your options

By installing two G5 displays in your panel, you not only get dedicated instruments for attitude reference and gyro/HSI directional guidance, but you also get the benefits of backup redundancy with dual ADAHRS and reversible display capability. In such installations, a secondary G5 can revert to displaying attitude information (consolidated with heading indication) in the unlikely event of a primary attitude indicator position failure. For added "go home" protection, each G5 display is available with a lithium-ion battery backup, which can provide up to 4 hours of emergency operation in the event of an aircraft power failure or shutdown.
